# Fediverse Radio & Music Hashtags This document tries to present the Status Quo of radio and music hashtags as currently used on the Fediverse. It makes usage suggestions, explains origins of certain hashtags, and discusses future directions, possible consolidations, cleanups, or hashtag retirements. (My personal goal are rough guidelines so I don’t have to plaster a handful of too similar hashtags on each of my posts.) It *might* help other to discover new music in the vast of the Fediverse, or simply to join conversations of like-minded people. What’s the difference? - Which was first? - 🐊 I've learned that `#TootRadio` is used to automatically create a playlist (https://pouet.audio). English is fine if the artist or style is otherwise not "typical US/UK associated".) ### #HumpDayHymn / #MidWeekMusic / #BergfestBanger 🏔️ - Songs to celebrate the middle of the work-week. Politically neutral to far left/anarchist.“ :link: https://troet.cafe/@baddadda/109546164407843885) ### #JukeboxFridayNight / #FridayNightJukebox - Themed nights like non-English lyrics ## Sub-community hashtags #### #FlintaDisco 🏳️‍🌈 - Music by female/lesbian/intersex/non-binary/trans-/agender artists. ## Mixcloud hashtags ### #Mixcloud Ⓜ️ - Use `#Mixcloud` for toots *about* Mixcloud (think meta discussions). May or may not contain embed links to Mixcloud shows. ### #MixcloudLive Ⓜ️🚨 - Use to announce or accompany (e.g. together with `#NowPlaying`) currently running live stream on Mixcloud. ### #MixcloudShow / #MixcloudUpload Ⓜ️📡 - Use for finished shows/uploads. - **Do not** combine with `#TootRadio`/`#FediRadio` and similar tags which are usually used for single-track audio embeds, which Mixclouds shows *are not*. ## Other music-related hashtags ### #AlbumOfTheYear / #AOTY / #AOTY20xx 💿 - Hashtag for "year in review" type posts. ### #BandcampFriday 💝 - A promotional action by Bandcamp.com, introduced in early 2020, in which Bandcap *»…waived [their] revenue share to help support the many artists who have seen their livelihoods disrupted by the pandemic.«* - Happens each first Friday of the month. See also: https://isitbandcampfriday.com/ - Often used by artist themselves to promote their works hosted on Bandcamp. ### #LiveNow - Wrong spelling of `#NowLive` ### #LiveMusic 🎤 - seems to be used by people posting video of live music - also used by people posting pictures of gigs they are at - and reviews of gigs ### #Music / #Musik / #musique / … 🎶 - very generic, out of scope for this document :wink: - for meta discussions - suggestion: **no not** use (esp. for radio usage) when more appropriate hashtags available - suggestion 2: **May** be used alongside any of the other more specific hashtags for discoverability, but is considered too broad to be used for or by special interest purposes. ### #MusicVideo 📺 - **Must** contain (a link to) an embeddable or free-to-click-to-play music video. ### #NewMusic, #NewMusic2023, … 🆕 - A bit more generic than `#NewMusicFriday` in that it is also used for discoveries that were not necessarily released within the last one or two weeks. - Depending on the point of view `#NewMusic` can be considered more timeless *or* more ephemeral. Prefer the year-based variant (`#NewMusicYYYY`) for cataloging use-cases and for more precise search and filtering. ### #NewMusicFriday 🔥 - Use this tag to talk about (very) new releases, which traditionally happen on Fridays. Usually used within one or two weeks of the release. - **Prefer** over `#NewReleases` or `#NewReleaseFriday` which are medium-agnostic and is used for movies, books etc. as well. ### #NewReleaseFriday → #NewMusicFriday ### #NowLive 🚨 - Used by @kommadieb@mstdn.social to announce just started live streams (as a marker for easier muting). ### #NowPlaying / #np ▶️ - **Should** be used exclusively by bots or apps to publish their currently played track automatically. - **Must** reflect an actually play (in the recent past) of the mentioned media, even though the play may not have been public. - **Should not** be used where others hashtags (esp. manually curated ones) are more appropriate - **May** contain links to embeddable media. - Use cases: - Web radios; as an archive for their listeners. - As a marker to easily mute it. Due to their (mostly) uncurated nature, #NowPlaying tends to be quite spammy. ## Known services that consume certain hashtags - **[pouet.audio](https://pouet.audio/)** — follows `#TootRadio` and `#PouetRadio` and handles links to Peertube, Youtube, Vimeo and Dailymotion videos, as well as sounds from Soundcloud. (Don't think it works with Bandcamp.) - **[radio.eldritch.cafe](https://radio.eldritch.cafe/)** — follows an instance (configurable) for a set of hashtags (also configurable) and plays tracks from YouTube (without video) in an endless stream. Defaults: glitch.social and tags: `#np`, `#nowplaying`, `#tootradio`, `#pouetradio`.
